My tale has been told again and again, and I’ve heard each one. Except for my hair, I barely recognize the pitiful renditions. Muddled versions, crafted to entertain laughing children…but the children wouldn’t have laughed if they’d known the real story. It wasn’t their fault. They didn’t know the truth. Nobody did.

My name is Rapunzel. I will tell you my story. I will tell you the truth.

Review

so i have been waiting to get my hands on this book for AGES so i was really excited when i got asked to review a copy. while i did enjoy this book it was not quite what i was expecting going into it and was up against some pretty stiff competition as a Rapunzel retelling as this story has been retold quite a few times in the past year or so. this story is a retelling in only the loosest of terms which if unlike me you had read the blurb may not surprise you all that much for the most part the tale is almost unrecognisable with the story more based around the origin of the tale and what Rapunzel’s life had really been like. the inclusion of the dragon which was missing from the original tale (or at least the versions I have read) did add an element of interest and i did enjoy all the unknown parts of Rapunzel’s life and how the story all came together.
however i found that the story did sometimes get repetitive with scenes being repeated without any extra information actually being added and personally i did find the “big twist” oddly predictable. this however did not overly detract from what was in truth an enjoyable version of Rapunzel. it may not be my favorite version of the tale but still one that i am sure i will come back too.

Teaser

Just go, Henry. Save yourself. I tried to shout, but my mouth wouldn’t give way to sound. I was paralyzed. Was it with fear, or something else? The cackling witch at the tree line convinced me it was her doing.

I heard Henry continue to shout for me to flee, but I didn’t respond. I didn’t move. I didn’t run. I was frozen like a lifeless statue in a cold museum. With only the movement of my eyes, I pleaded with him to help me. A tear escaped one of my eyes then rolled down my cheek. That single tear managed to do what my heart and body could not. Escape.

Fear, like unseen hands, gripped my lungs and tried to crush them slowly. My stomach churned and threatened to empty. Would we die here?

The gentle chill of night had turned into a mid-winter’s frost. Tiny bumps rose on my arms and the small hairs prickled to attention. I opened my mouth to speak, but the words remained trapped in my throat.

How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it’s getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she’s haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they’re destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

Review

The love story where hate turns to love has become quite a cliché but this story turns it on its head. It is not simply personality traits or love disguised as hate that keeps this couple apart but an ancient legacy. In many ways this book reminds me of many other paranormal romances available to young adults (eg. twilight, hush hush, fallen, mortal instruments) however playing with Greek gods was a nice change from the normal vampires or angels that seem to fill the shelves these days.
the ending i must admit kind of annoyed me a little but i am hoping that maybe that might be remedied in Dreamless

Quotes

“I don’t care how hard being together is, nothing is worse than being apart.”

“You’ve got the killer instincts of a houseplant”

“And I don’t just WANT you, Helen. I LOVE you. Big difference.”

“The Gods know what it is to be eternal, and they love to toy with mortals who use absolutes.”

Set in the romantic and death-defying world of the international bestselling Die for Me trilogy, this digital original novella follows Jules, a brooding, immortal French artist who has fallen in love with his best friend’s girlfriend.

Jules Marchenoir is a revenant-an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save human lives. He’s spent the better part of the last century flirting his way through Paris, but when he met Kate Mercier, the heroine from Amy Plum’s Die for Me trilogy, he knew his afterlife had changed forever and he had found the love of his life. Until Kate fell for his best friend, Vincent. Now Jules is faced with an impossible decision: choosing between his loyal friend and a love truly worth dying for.

Review

this one while interesting i must admit annoyed me just a little. while i understand the need for the love triangle in this story Orion really did very little for me in the way of a love interest and it felt like for the most part Helen felt the same. the “cousins” storyline i must say i am over entirely and i was hoping the truth would come out (to the main characters as us the readers already know) the ending i was quite impressed with as was i with the authors portrayal of the underworld but there were a few moments of confusion that did not quite add up (i.e. at various points Hector was called Lucas’ brother instead of his cousin)

Quotes

“…try to remember that dreams do come true, but they don’t come easily.”

“It’s not our talents that make us safe or dangerous, it’s our choices.”

“Even if it kills me, staying awake and seeing you… is better than any dream.”

After accidentally unleashing the gods from their captivity on Olympus, Helen must find a way to re-imprison them without starting a devastating war. But the gods are angry, and their thirst for blood already has a body count.

To make matters worse, the Oracle reveals that a diabolical Tyrant is lurking among them, which drives a wedge between the once-solid group of friends. As the gods use the Scions against one another, Lucas’s life hangs in the balance. Still unsure whether she loves him or Orion, Helen is forced to make a terrifying decision, for war is coming to her shores.

In Josephine Angelini’s compelling conclusion to the masterfully woven Starcrossed trilogy, a goddess must rise above it all to change a destiny that’s been written in the stars. With worlds built just as fast as they crumble, love and war collide in an all-out battle that will leave no question unanswered and no heart untouched.

Review

as i was starting to suspect from the end of Dreamless this story became just a little off. the main reason for this is that the author pitted Helen against all powerful gods and so therefore had to make her all powerful this meant that Helen became immortal and able to make anything happen changing the rules of the story completely. creating this unbeatable entity as the main character made the story a little dull for me even if we always know the main character has to survive. the big twist about who the tyrant is was predictable… i had it basically worked out since we were first told of the tyrant and i must admit i was expecting a little more as to the reasoning behind Daphne being the worst mother of all time. the “memories” of past Helens were interesting but often a little unnecessary.all these factors ultimately led to what was for me a bad ending to the series, although admittedly i can not come up with a better alternative given that the author chose such a formidable antagonist

Quotes

“some things stay a little bit broken forever—even after they’ve been fixed.”

“I chose love—I chose you over everything that was offered to me.”

“My whole life I’ve wondered what it feels like to be loved like that. To be loved more.”

In Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl, Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.
Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

Review

yes i did read this 400+ page book in a day… and yes it was amazing.
this was my first Rowell book having not yet fallen for the craze that is Eleanor and Park and i must admit i had a bad feeling that i wouldn’t enjoy it, don’t ask me why because i have heard nothing but good things about it.
i loved the dynamic between Cath and Wren and i found that Rowell perfectly captured the first year experience. i may never have been nearly as much a part of a fandom as Cath was but i loved the perspective of a character that was a writer. while personally i was not all that fussed on the love interest it was still pulled off really well and i liked that he was not your average love interest you see so often in YA.
the exerts from Simon Snow were brilliant and defiantly reminiscent of Harry Potter but i am still working out if Baz is meant to be Ron, Malfoy or some combination of both (that is my guess)

Quotes

“In new situations, all the trickiest rules are the ones nobody bothers to explain to you. (And the ones you can’t Google.)”

“Happily ever after, or even just together ever after, is not cheesy,” Wren said. “It’s the noblest, like, the most courageous thing two people can shoot for.”

“Real life was something happening in her peripheral vision.”

IT MATCHES

and it is absolutely beautiful. to me this cover appears to capture Dawn and sprng which I think is a lovely image for the last book of a series especially as the first cover always reminded me of dusk and autumn. there is not much to say about this as I think it is just about the perfect cover.

  sm 13104080

with the repetition of the eye, with the water in the corner becoming smaller, with each book and the repeated motif of the bird within the eye the beauty of  these covers is really in the details

so which of these gorgeous covers is your favourite?

Rate that Cover: Cress

It is time for another Rate That Cover and this time it is the cover reveal for Cress book 3 in the Lunar Chronicles this time showcasing Rapunzel.

cress

one thing I love is the title Cress is a type of lettuce drawing that connection to how Rapunzel got her name. while I don’t find the cover to fit perfectly into the set it does not stand out as wrong and considering Rapunzel is the princess with the golden hair and gold is not one of the colours included in previous covers the cover actually does a great job of fitting in. The cover is not quite as dark as the first two but still manages to capture the mystery and intrigue of the first two.

Cs

and when you look at the cover as an individual it is really just GORGEOUS. The glimmer on the red ribbon really bringing it to life. all in all I must say I really LOVE this cover but what do you think?

This sends them both into a spiral that threatens to end Arianne’s life. But will Niko break his own Reaper’s code to save her? And what would the consequences be if he did?

Review

this is one of those books that i must admit confused me in the beginning until i realised how all the characters fit together and then it was amazing. when i asked for this book to review i did it with no knowledge of what it was about only that it was by the wonderful Kate Evangelista and i must say i am glad i did not read the blurb because on reading it after the book i was disappointed in how much is given away. that being said the book was wonderful, while paranormal romances may be a huge trend reapers are not common and this gave the book such an original set of possibilities. I love Arianne’s strength which is also fairly unusual when a mere mortal is placed alongside the paranormal love interest. while Niko was just that little bit too perfect for me he still made an interesting romantic lead with his job being enough to separate him from other male leads. one of my favourite touches was the split POV throughout the stories, not just between the romantic leads as is becoming so common, but also through the eyes of death himself.  and with that ending i am not ashamed to admit i am itching for the sequel.

Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?
Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan’s life. Having missed her flight, she’s stuck at JFK airport and late to her father’s second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon-to-be stepmother Hadley’s never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport’s cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he’s British, and he’s sitting in her row.
A long night on the plane passes in the blink of an eye, and Hadley and Oliver lose track of each other in the airport chaos upon arrival. Can fate intervene to bring them together once more?
Quirks of timing play out in this romantic and cinematic novel about family connections, second chances, and first loves. Set over a twenty-four-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver’s story will make you believe that true love finds you when you’re least expecting it.

Review

While i may not have enjoyed this book as much as This Is What Happy Looks Like it is written beautifully and captures those moments between the meeting of strangers and the realization of something more perfectly. an if it had not been written so beautifully i may never have picked up her other books. while it is only short i feel that for this story it was the perfect length and packed full of as many warm and fuzzies you can squeeze into a suitcase.

Quotes

“It’s not the changes that will break your heart; it’s that tug of familiarity.”

“Did you know that people who meet at least three different times within twenty-four hour period are ninety-eight percent more likely to meet again?”

“It’s one thing to run away when someone’s chasing you. It’s entirely another to be running all alone.”

“Is it possible not to ever know your type-not to even know you have a type-until quite suddenly you do?”

… i could go on and on… this author is just too quotable.

Review

this book was beautiful. it had me laughing and smiling… and just basically AWWWW-ING every couple of pages. it was exquisitely written making what would otherwise have just been a fun trashy book into something a little bit more… that being said i felt the ending was not quite what i had hoped throughout the book with me being left wondering what actually happens to the characters afterwards, despite how long this book was i just simply was not ready to say goodbye. i loved the inclusion of emails at the beginning of each chapter and the witty chemistry between the leads. the issue of celebrity is dealt with really well in this book and it was nice for this not to be a story of a celebrity and his fan.

Quotes

“Exactly. How can you know it makes you happy if you’ve never experienced it?”
“There are different kinds of happy,” she said. “Some kinds don’t need any proof.”

“Childhood memories were like airplane luggage; no matter how far you were traveling or how long you needed them to last, you were only ever allowed two bags. And while those bags might hold a few hazy recollections—a diner with a jukebox at the table, being pushed on a swing set, the way it felt to be picked up and spun around—it didn’t seem enough to last a whole lifetime.”

“It was exactly as he’d thought it would be, like the first time and the millionth time all at once, like being wide awake, like losing his balance. Only this time, it wasn’t just him; this time, they were losing their balance together.”

the first time i read this book was as my first ebook squinting to try and read this on my phone… the next day i ran out and bought both this and the sequel because not only is the cover BEAUTIFUL but so is the book itself. on second reading i found this book no less enjoyable… while the majority of this book is set up and introduction, which may not be as good the second time around i still found it wonderfully enjoyable and have once again jumped right into the second book. the love connection is so realistic and sweet and i love the entire cast not just the two romantic leads.

Quotes

Review

the story really gets stared in this dramatic and beautiful sequel. while things may have been set into motion in the first book this second book gives us all the information to see the bigger picture of this series. Throw in a shocking cliffhanger ending and you have a book i literally could not put down that has me chomping at the bit to see how this series ends… although i have my suspicions.

Review

as this story tells 2 books worth of information in under 100 pages it is no surprise that it feels rushed and that the story is told rather than experienced but there are some beautiful scenes which we can now see from Jules POV plus an extra paragraph after the end of Until i die that make you rush to pick up book 3… that paragraph changed what i thought the ending was ENTIRELY. on a side note … if i was not already in love with him this novella made me fall for Jules entirely… to the point i was actually hoping that he would win the girl off Vincent in the last book

Quotes

“She leaves an empty hole behind her. There was this feeling of optimism and joy in the house when she was around that’s now turned into void. Like Vincent, I feel hollow. Sad. And as the days pass, I begin to realize I’ve grown to care for Kate. Not as my best friend’s girlfriend, but as someone in and of herself. And I realize I miss her.”

“It’s with a feeling of despair that I return her to his arms. I want him to be angry. I want him to challenge me. Because then the truth will be out and I won’t have to hide my feelings. But he trusts me too much to suspect me. And I love him too much to hurt him.”

I will not lose another person I love. I will not let history repeat itself.
Vincent waited lifetimes to find me, but in an instant our future together was shattered. He was betrayed by someone we both called a friend, and I lost him. Now our enemy is determined to rule over France’s immortals, and willing to wage a war to get what they want.
It shouldn’t be possible, none of it should be, but this is my reality. I know Vincent is somewhere out there, I know he’s not completely gone, and I will do anything to save him.
After what we’ve already fought to achieve, a life without Vincent is unimaginable. He once swore to avoid dying—to go against his nature and forsake sacrificing himself for others—so that we could be together. How can I not risk everything to bring my love back to me?

Review

i hate to say it but i was a shade disappointed with this book. while i doubted that Kate would end up with Jules (who i am surprised to say i was cheering for after Die for Her) i was sort of hoping for there to be a little development there… because that is what i thought was suggested at the end of that novella. considering Vincent was killed  i was expecting a little more action in the beginning of the book to make up for the lack of romance… unfortunately instead we are given pages upon pages of “research” and reading books. that being said after that halfway mark things did get more exciting and although i foresaw the “Big Twist” i am still pleased with how the Author dealt with the issue. my other big complaint is to me at least the story did not feel quite finished with some loose ends still hanging… while others were wrapped up very quickly But at least Ambrose FINALLY got his act together maybe a spinoff is coming (focused around the “Numa” Louis)  or maybe i just need to close the book an except that this story continues without me.

Quotes

“Kate, I’ll say it like this. Vincent is my best friend. There’s not a person in this world I’m closer to. But for the past year, I have betrayed him in my heart every single day because I want for myself what he loves the very most.”

“The owner of the boom box marches over and turns the music down. He shrugs when he sees me staring. “Hey, noise pollution elicits fewer phone calls to the police than screaming and battle sounds. At least, that’s the case in Berlin,” he says.”

“Feelings change with time – or at least pain lessens with time; I know that from experience.”

“I understand it, but I don’t like it. I wish we could all be together like before: best friends, not heartbroken strangers.”

I only read this book on the suggestion of someone and I have learnt to always follow her suggestions. this book seemed like just your average futuristic battle against the bad guy but once you get half way through it was amazing, (not telling why) I willingly admit this book made me cry and I am a little dissapointed that now i have read it I can’t read it for the first time again because it will never be the same. This is the sort of book that once I finished it I very nearly turned around and re-read it.

Quotes

“I walk among my enemies. But I carry my friends with me.”

“Death is a great transformation. But it is not an end.”

“There will come a day when a thousand Illegals descend on your detention centres. Boomers will breach the walls. Skychangers will send lightning to strike you all down from above, and Rumblers will open the earth to swallow you up from below. There will be nowhere to hide, nowhere to run, and no way to stop them from freeing every single Illegal in this centre. And when that day comes, Justin Connor, think of me.”
