How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it’s getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she’s haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they’re destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart.

Review

The love story where hate turns to love has become quite a cliché but this story turns it on its head. It is not simply personality traits or love disguised as hate that keeps this couple apart but an ancient legacy. In many ways this book reminds me of many other paranormal romances available to young adults (eg. twilight, hush hush, fallen, mortal instruments) however playing with Greek gods was a nice change from the normal vampires or angels that seem to fill the shelves these days.
the ending i must admit kind of annoyed me a little but i am hoping that maybe that might be remedied in Dreamless

Quotes

“I don’t care how hard being together is, nothing is worse than being apart.”

“You’ve got the killer instincts of a houseplant”

“And I don’t just WANT you, Helen. I LOVE you. Big difference.”

“The Gods know what it is to be eternal, and they love to toy with mortals who use absolutes.”

Set in the romantic and death-defying world of the international bestselling Die for Me trilogy, this digital original novella follows Jules, a brooding, immortal French artist who has fallen in love with his best friend’s girlfriend.

Jules Marchenoir is a revenant-an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save human lives. He’s spent the better part of the last century flirting his way through Paris, but when he met Kate Mercier, the heroine from Amy Plum’s Die for Me trilogy, he knew his afterlife had changed forever and he had found the love of his life. Until Kate fell for his best friend, Vincent. Now Jules is faced with an impossible decision: choosing between his loyal friend and a love truly worth dying for.

Review

this one while interesting i must admit annoyed me just a little. while i understand the need for the love triangle in this story Orion really did very little for me in the way of a love interest and it felt like for the most part Helen felt the same. the “cousins” storyline i must say i am over entirely and i was hoping the truth would come out (to the main characters as us the readers already know) the ending i was quite impressed with as was i with the authors portrayal of the underworld but there were a few moments of confusion that did not quite add up (i.e. at various points Hector was called Lucas’ brother instead of his cousin)

Quotes

“…try to remember that dreams do come true, but they don’t come easily.”

“It’s not our talents that make us safe or dangerous, it’s our choices.”

“Even if it kills me, staying awake and seeing you… is better than any dream.”

After accidentally unleashing the gods from their captivity on Olympus, Helen must find a way to re-imprison them without starting a devastating war. But the gods are angry, and their thirst for blood already has a body count.

To make matters worse, the Oracle reveals that a diabolical Tyrant is lurking among them, which drives a wedge between the once-solid group of friends. As the gods use the Scions against one another, Lucas’s life hangs in the balance. Still unsure whether she loves him or Orion, Helen is forced to make a terrifying decision, for war is coming to her shores.

In Josephine Angelini’s compelling conclusion to the masterfully woven Starcrossed trilogy, a goddess must rise above it all to change a destiny that’s been written in the stars. With worlds built just as fast as they crumble, love and war collide in an all-out battle that will leave no question unanswered and no heart untouched.

Review

as i was starting to suspect from the end of Dreamless this story became just a little off. the main reason for this is that the author pitted Helen against all powerful gods and so therefore had to make her all powerful this meant that Helen became immortal and able to make anything happen changing the rules of the story completely. creating this unbeatable entity as the main character made the story a little dull for me even if we always know the main character has to survive. the big twist about who the tyrant is was predictable… i had it basically worked out since we were first told of the tyrant and i must admit i was expecting a little more as to the reasoning behind Daphne being the worst mother of all time. the “memories” of past Helens were interesting but often a little unnecessary.all these factors ultimately led to what was for me a bad ending to the series, although admittedly i can not come up with a better alternative given that the author chose such a formidable antagonist

Quotes

“some things stay a little bit broken forever—even after they’ve been fixed.”

“I chose love—I chose you over everything that was offered to me.”

“My whole life I’ve wondered what it feels like to be loved like that. To be loved more.”

When a drunk driver tragically orphans Skylar Rose at the age of sixteen, she leaves her dreams behind and takes on the daunting task of helping her elderly grandmother raise her young sister. While other girls her age were living a typical carefree life, she was picking up double shifts at a local café and struggling to pay the bills.
Always putting her sister’s needs and school first, Skylar has never had time to date or develop relationships. Now a senior in college, she has her sights set on an amazing internship opportunity. The last thing she needed was for a sexy distraction like Sebastian Thorne to walk into her life.
Sebastian Thorne had been an entitled and reckless nineteen year old when he got behind the wheel of his new sports car that night. When his night of indulgence goes tragically wrong, Sebastian hesitantly turns to the one person, he knows can make everything go away…the one person he hates ..his father.
Now twenty-six, Sebastian is the young enigmatic and powerful CEO of his late father’s design company, Thorne Enterprises. With both millions in the bank and a new woman on his arm almost every night, the world never knew the dark secret he carried inside. Still plagued with nightmares from the night of that horrific accident and having to leave the beautiful girl behind, Sebastian vows to find the one that haunts his dreams. Sometimes the choice of revisiting our past opens the door to a future that we never thought possible.
Haunted by their past, these two want nothing more than to have their life given back to them. But what do you do when the person who gave you back your life, was the very one that took it from you in the first place?

Review

this book sits firmly in the New-Adult to Adult age group with strong and graphic scenes. that being said unlike many romances for this age group i have read every second chapter was not a graphic sex scenes leading the story to truly be more about the love and relationship than the lust and sex i have come to expect. that being said this story did admittedly follow many cliches of this genre with the typical tragic and violent past given to the leading lady.

Personally for the most part i was not a huge fan of the characters both were the “perfect” archetype of their gender, him being the handsome rich and powerful “prince” while she was the beautiful innocent damsel in distress. this in itself is usually enough to turn me away from a book however there was something addictive about the writing that led me to continue to race through the story. while sometimes the retelling of entire scenes from another point of view got irritating particularly when they did not add much that the author had not been able to convey through body language or dialogue the split perspectives was done really well with all characters being given a unique and interesting voice.

The plot spun all over the place. going in i thought that the big twist was just going to be that Sebastian was the one responsible for her parents death however for the majority of the book this detail is almost forgotten as Skylar has so many other problems for the story to work through. while at points these extra conflicts seemed unnecessary by the end of the book i was glad for these extra conflicts outside what i had incorrectly assumed to be the main one as they helped to develop the characters in preparation of the unexpected (to me anyway) second book Thorneless which will be out on the 16th, which given the cliffhanger ending i must say i am glad about.

This sends them both into a spiral that threatens to end Arianne’s life. But will Niko break his own Reaper’s code to save her? And what would the consequences be if he did?

Review

this is one of those books that i must admit confused me in the beginning until i realised how all the characters fit together and then it was amazing. when i asked for this book to review i did it with no knowledge of what it was about only that it was by the wonderful Kate Evangelista and i must say i am glad i did not read the blurb because on reading it after the book i was disappointed in how much is given away. that being said the book was wonderful, while paranormal romances may be a huge trend reapers are not common and this gave the book such an original set of possibilities. I love Arianne’s strength which is also fairly unusual when a mere mortal is placed alongside the paranormal love interest. while Niko was just that little bit too perfect for me he still made an interesting romantic lead with his job being enough to separate him from other male leads. one of my favourite touches was the split POV throughout the stories, not just between the romantic leads as is becoming so common, but also through the eyes of death himself.  and with that ending i am not ashamed to admit i am itching for the sequel.

Review

the first time i read this book was as my first ebook squinting to try and read this on my phone… the next day i ran out and bought both this and the sequel because not only is the cover BEAUTIFUL but so is the book itself. on second reading i found this book no less enjoyable… while the majority of this book is set up and introduction, which may not be as good the second time around i still found it wonderfully enjoyable and have once again jumped right into the second book. the love connection is so realistic and sweet and i love the entire cast not just the two romantic leads.

Quotes

“Well, spit on my empty grave–if it ain’t the attack of the Disney princesses!”

They might have the romance of the century, but will that be enough?

Review

the story really gets stared in this dramatic and beautiful sequel. while things may have been set into motion in the first book this second book gives us all the information to see the bigger picture of this series. Throw in a shocking cliffhanger ending and you have a book i literally could not put down that has me chomping at the bit to see how this series ends… although i have my suspicions.

Quotes

“Still in one piece?” Vincent teased, pulling me close & planting a soft kiss on my lips. “After dirty-dancing with Jules, I’m not sure.”

“As Jules kissed my cheeks he whispered, “She has nothing on you, of course, Kates. It’s just that you’re so very…taken.”

“If “Flirt” qualified as a foreign language, my sister and Ambrose would both have PhDs in it.”

Review

as this story tells 2 books worth of information in under 100 pages it is no surprise that it feels rushed and that the story is told rather than experienced but there are some beautiful scenes which we can now see from Jules POV plus an extra paragraph after the end of Until i die that make you rush to pick up book 3… that paragraph changed what i thought the ending was ENTIRELY. on a side note … if i was not already in love with him this novella made me fall for Jules entirely… to the point i was actually hoping that he would win the girl off Vincent in the last book

Quotes

“She leaves an empty hole behind her. There was this feeling of optimism and joy in the house when she was around that’s now turned into void. Like Vincent, I feel hollow. Sad. And as the days pass, I begin to realize I’ve grown to care for Kate. Not as my best friend’s girlfriend, but as someone in and of herself. And I realize I miss her.”

“It’s with a feeling of despair that I return her to his arms. I want him to be angry. I want him to challenge me. Because then the truth will be out and I won’t have to hide my feelings. But he trusts me too much to suspect me. And I love him too much to hurt him.”

I will not lose another person I love. I will not let history repeat itself.
Vincent waited lifetimes to find me, but in an instant our future together was shattered. He was betrayed by someone we both called a friend, and I lost him. Now our enemy is determined to rule over France’s immortals, and willing to wage a war to get what they want.
It shouldn’t be possible, none of it should be, but this is my reality. I know Vincent is somewhere out there, I know he’s not completely gone, and I will do anything to save him.
After what we’ve already fought to achieve, a life without Vincent is unimaginable. He once swore to avoid dying—to go against his nature and forsake sacrificing himself for others—so that we could be together. How can I not risk everything to bring my love back to me?

Review

i hate to say it but i was a shade disappointed with this book. while i doubted that Kate would end up with Jules (who i am surprised to say i was cheering for after Die for Her) i was sort of hoping for there to be a little development there… because that is what i thought was suggested at the end of that novella. considering Vincent was killed  i was expecting a little more action in the beginning of the book to make up for the lack of romance… unfortunately instead we are given pages upon pages of “research” and reading books. that being said after that halfway mark things did get more exciting and although i foresaw the “Big Twist” i am still pleased with how the Author dealt with the issue. my other big complaint is to me at least the story did not feel quite finished with some loose ends still hanging… while others were wrapped up very quickly But at least Ambrose FINALLY got his act together maybe a spinoff is coming (focused around the “Numa” Louis)  or maybe i just need to close the book an except that this story continues without me.

Quotes

“Kate, I’ll say it like this. Vincent is my best friend. There’s not a person in this world I’m closer to. But for the past year, I have betrayed him in my heart every single day because I want for myself what he loves the very most.”

“The owner of the boom box marches over and turns the music down. He shrugs when he sees me staring. “Hey, noise pollution elicits fewer phone calls to the police than screaming and battle sounds. At least, that’s the case in Berlin,” he says.”

“Feelings change with time – or at least pain lessens with time; I know that from experience.”

“I understand it, but I don’t like it. I wish we could all be together like before: best friends, not heartbroken strangers.”

Review

I only read this book on the suggestion of someone and I have learnt to always follow her suggestions. this book seemed like just your average futuristic battle against the bad guy but once you get half way through it was amazing, (not telling why) I willingly admit this book made me cry and I am a little dissapointed that now i have read it I can’t read it for the first time again because it will never be the same. This is the sort of book that once I finished it I very nearly turned around and re-read it.

Quotes

“I walk among my enemies. But I carry my friends with me.”

“Death is a great transformation. But it is not an end.”

“There will come a day when a thousand Illegals descend on your detention centres. Boomers will breach the walls. Skychangers will send lightning to strike you all down from above, and Rumblers will open the earth to swallow you up from below. There will be nowhere to hide, nowhere to run, and no way to stop them from freeing every single Illegal in this centre. And when that day comes, Justin Connor, think of me.”

No word as to what Book 2 is yet only that there will be one. I will keep you in the loop because this is one of the best books i have seen from an Australian author since John Marsden with Tomorrow When The War Began.

Cover Face Off: Hero

Now for the book that has gone through the most cover changes before it has even been released, i am of course talking about book two of the amazing Alethea Kontis’s woodcutter sisters series, Hero. although in fairness these cover changes may just be the result of the author keeping us in the loop through every cover change not just releasing it once it has been confirmed as many authors do. Now this book is the sequel to enchanted and as such I will show you a copy of the first book

Top 10 (or So) Book Series I Need To Start

series to start

There are so many books out there that i am constantly being barraged with new books, which are often only the first books in the series. some have been sitting on this list for a very long time while others have only just made an appearance while waiting has it’s advantages such as with Unearthly by the time i got around to reading it the whole series was out while others are just a case of i really, really want to read them but they just keep getting pushed down the list.

11 Legend ~ Marie Lu

L

yes 11 because i can’t count. … or narrow anything down.so so so interested in this series… have heard nothing but good things about it and have actually had the first book sitting on my e-reader since i got it in December.

10 Chaos Walking ~ Patrick Ness

TKONLG

I am not entirely sure what this series is about (Hence it holding 10th place) but i have heard nothing but good things about it and it is inevitable that i will eventually pick it up.

the first book in this Series is The Knife of Never Letting Go and that is the reason that even if i had not found glowing reviews about this book i would of picked it up. so intriguing (but really need to find out what this is actually about)

9 The Lord Of The Rings ~ J.R.R. Tolkien

TLOR

yep i have yet to read this series… this is despite being an avid reader of fantasy, loving epic quest-y books and just generally liking LONG books, this believe it or not is also in spite of having a beautiful illustrated hard cover omnibus volume that i inherited from my dad… i really have no excuse for not reading this one other than it is sooo huge that it works perfectly well as a bookend and i just haven’t had time… also with so many people telling me i “have to read it” every time i think about it, it just feels like required reading

8 The Once And Future King ~ T.H. White

TOAFK

if you are a regular reader you may remember this book appearing in the books i bought last month While i had been waiting to get my hands on a nice copy of this book for a while i am not surprised that i have not yet read it. this omnibus volume is 858 pages worth of Arthurian legends told in old fashioned flowery language, while i am dying to read it i doubt it will help me achieve my goal of reading 300 books this year… a task that i have already fallen behind on… i think i will choose a smaller goal next year so i can take on meatier reads without a worry.

7 The Tiger Saga ~ Colleen Houck

TC

again this one i am not 100% sure what it is about but with the GORGEOUS covers and the split reviews i have been curious as to what i will think about this series. but as i do not have a copy of the first book Tigers Curse and the library has yet to stock the first book (despite the rest of the series sitting on the shelf) who knows when i will get around to reading it.

6 Daughter of Smoke & Bone ~ Laini Taylor

DOSB

this series has been recommended to me by countless people most notably my favorite bookstore attendant (who i must say has amazing taste and is yet to lead me wrong)…  and yet i have yet to find it on my shelves…. i am not entirely sure why (particularly when i saw the pretty cover) the titles are enticing and you will defiantly find me devouring this series in the not too distant future… but i think i will wait until the release of the last book because something tells me once i start i will not want to stop.

5 Throne of Glass ~ Sarah J. Maas

TOG

the first book has been sitting on my bookshelf unread since it’s release date (I bought it and got a free copy of Shatter Me) after reading the blurb i was instantly reminded of Poison Study by none other than the great Maria V. Snyder, and so it was no surprise that i decided i HAD to read it, and when you see it’s Kick Ass cover it is no surprise that i HAD to have it, i have actually picked this up to read a couple of times this year (because i am just DYING to) but i am making myself wait until Crown of Midnight (book #2) comes out at the end of August… on a side note how epic are those titles?

4 Shatter Me ~ Tahereh Mafi

SM

Like Throne of Glass this book has been sitting on my shelf unread for nearly a year and like Throne of glass i am waiting to get my hands on the sequel …. yes it has been released my problem of course is despite getting a perfectly good copy of the book (for free might i add) it is the wrong cover… so i am trying to get my hands on the beautiful Eye cover which continues throughout the series

A Song of Ice and Fire ~ George R.R. Martin

GOT

Most People will be familiar with this series (although they may merely know it as Game Of Thrones) like many people i only heard about this series after the TV show aired and while i have yet to watch it i am very excited by this series. however with this series there are most defiantly things that have led to my not reading it (yet). firstly every time i have walked into a book store to look at buying the books i have been confused as to the order of the books, thanks mainly to some editions halving the books while others don’t (but this has been mostly eliminated thanks to goodreads) secondly this series is filled with massive scarily big books and from what i have been told a tonne of characters and while that sounds intriguing it defiantly tells me i will want to read  this series all together (because the all have told me by the end you NEED the next book) which is where you have come to the main reason i am not in any rush  to start reading this series. currently we have 5 of the 7 books in the series… this series was started 17 years ago… while this is understandable considering the size of the books when you consider that the last book in the series is not expected for release until 2019 you can understand why i am in no HUGE rush, plus when you add in the fact i am crazily obsessive compulsive about my covers matching it is understandable (particularly when there is over 150 versions of the first book) that i wait until all the books are out before buying a lovely matching set

2 Covenant ~ Jennifer L. Armentrout

HB

while i did manage to get the first book (half-blood) from the library i did really want to read the entire set together and i had to return it before i collected them all. from the blurb this sounds a lot like Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series, a series that i must admit i loved to death. as such i am more than curious about this one (must just remember not to compare them too much. also once again how GORGEOUS are the covers.

1 Percy Jackson and the Olympians ~ Rick Riordan

TLT

while many people are raving about the spin off series The Heroes of Olympus i myself have yet to even read the wonder that (i am sure) is this series. while i loved the movie for the first book (Percy Jackson and the lightning thief) i have been itching to read the original story particularly as it has an entire series for me to immerse myself in.

Thirty-five girls came to the palace to compete in the Selection. All but six have been sent home. And only one will get to marry Prince Maxon and be crowned princess of Iléa.

America still isn’t sure where her heart lies. When she’s with Maxon, she’s swept up in their new and breathless romance, and can’t dream of being with anyone else. But whenever she sees Aspen standing guard around the palace, and is overcome with memories of the life they planned to share. With the group narrowed down to the Elite, the other girls are even more determined to win Maxon over—and time is running out for America to decide.

Just when America is sure she’s made her choice, a devastating loss makes her question everything again. And while she’s struggling to imagine her future, the violent rebels that are determined to overthrow the monarchy are growing stronger and their plans could destroy her chance at any kind of happy ending.

Review

while i did not enjoy this quite as much as the first this is where i feel the Real story is beginning. taking the light frivolous beginning that was the Selection, the elite twists it into something dark. while i must admit i was surprised by some of Maxon’s actions he did always come through in the end and at no point in this book did my loyalty to him change (which is more than i can say for America). She was all over the place and i am getting sick of her to-ing and fro-ing (JUST PICK MAXON HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR YOU). The ending was a shock and i just could not imagine it happening … that being said there were quite a few things that shocked me (even if i may have guessed they would happen). unfortunately some of the magic of the selection was lost, (despite the fact i am still firmly team Maxon) the prince has lost some of his shine, and America’s insecurities and indecisiveness was making me want to slap her (although not as much as i want to slap Celeste) America defiantly has it in her to be a princess but she needs to let go of Aspen (as it does not seem she actually wants him anymore anyway plus he hardly believes in her) and learn to trust Maxon… although admittedly with him still dating 3 other girls i can understand why she doesn’t.

Quotes

“Love is beautiful fear”

“It turns out I’m absolutely terrible at staying away from you. It’s a very serious problem.”

“Sometimes I feel like we’re a knot, too tangled to be taken apart.”

“You know that you’ve found something amazing, and you want to hold on to it forever; and every second after you have it, you fear the moment you might lose it.”

Next Book

The Next and Last book in this Series The One (book #3) is expected to be released on the 6th of May next year

personally i am hoping for a white dress on the cover (you know bridal and all that)
