July… In which my budget dies a horrible death.

well you know what they say a book a day keeps your money away… and that’s exactly what happened this month with a total of 31 books which does not even need me to calculate how many books that is a day.. a book EVERY SINGLE DAY… making this the worst book buying month for me EVER when i started this i was sitting at a book every 1.3 days which is still better than this month… next month i am going to cut right back so my budget can recover… but for now lets look at the pretty books.

ok as we are well into august now and i haven’t got the pictures i will just give you the video version

A belated June Haul

Yes this post is late…very very late but in my defense i have been in hospital and on very high pain meds… but still i present to you the books of June… i am not including any books i may have got after the cut off despite being late.

i predicted that this month would see a rise in books and guess what IT DID. when you factor in all the books i ordered online in previous months plus the fact that i tend to buy books while stressed (say in end of semester exams) and yes my book buying did go up a little (AKA HEAPS) while last month i got away with only 4 books this time it was more than 4 times that… anyway enough of the berating (cause i know this month is looking pretty bad too) lets get on to the exciting part… THE BOOKS

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

I have tried to claim from the beginning that cookbooks don’t count (still not sure if i actually believe that or not) but even though these two delicious looking cookbooks came out of my budget i still think it was worth it. Blissful Brownies was only $6 and Macaroons was only $10 so that is not that much of a stretch… compared to the rest of them

This month I decided to try “budget books”… in other words i tried to get books really cheap. these two were my attempt at second hand books… and while they were not overly expensive… they are probably not the books i would have picked up new (although i did want a copy of Aesop’s fables i am still eying a pretty leather bound edition and he’s just not that into you is something that i think could be a bit of a laugh) so did i really save any money? my other attempt at saving money was an even bigger failure though… and those books will appear in July’s Haul.

If you have been on my blog before you may have come across my review of John Green’s The fault in Our Stars and know that i was not overly impressed. and yet here i stand with not one but 2 new John Green books… and really the reason is simply that while i did not overly care for the story… the writing was beautiful and with everyone raving about him it seems harsh to write him off after only one book (which was a cancer book… which as a general rule i HATE) so we have Looking for Alaska which is the other book i hear about everywhere and An Abundance of katherines which i picked up because it seemed to be a road-trip book… which i must admit i LOVE and it seems like a happy book… so should be a complete contrast to the fault in our stars.

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey I saw in a book shop thought it looked interesting then managed to put down… with the though i Might come back for that. since then this book has exploded. so many great reviews have popped up and as i was already considering getting this anyway i raced out to pick up a copy.  as for Richelle Mead’s  Gameboard of the gods… after her Vampire academy series i would practically buy anything this women writes… plus it sounds so interesting.

These two books were my rewards for finishing books for my Classic Challenge where i did allow myself to pick up a new classic for everyone that i read.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

these 8 were all online purchases which i have been waiting for… and with the exception of The girl in the steel corset were bought before this month. most of them are the next or last book in a series and the ones that aren’t are books where i have bought the entire series (at least as of this moment).

so that comes to 18 books which is 1 book every 1.6 days… not SOOO bad but a huge jump on last time… then again this month i have already made it halfway to this number in only a week… so who knows how many to expect for July.

May’s Small Stack

And it is a record… although not sure if it is a big enough record (or should i say small enough) record to be celebrating … many normal people would think this many books was a lot of books to buy in a month (especially if you count the books that i ordered and i do not have yet… which will be added to the list for what ever month they arrive in)

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

the first book of the month is The School for Good and Evil ~ Soman Chainani while the cover intrigued me the first time i saw it online i was not entirely sure i was going to buy it…. i mean it looks amazing and everything but defiantly has the appearance of a children’s book… which i really should not be continuing to buy (not that that has ever stopped me) but when i saw it on the shelf for all of $10 who am i too say no?

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

the next book was Spirit by Brigid Kemmerer i had the first 2 so i was always going to pick this up. i did think this was the last book in the series but she has released that there will be at least 2 more.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

I only picked this one up on the last day of May. Jamie Ponti’s Sea of Love is in the Simon Pulse Romantic Comedies collection and this is a lovely edition from before they started grouping the books and got rid of these cute cartoon covers. plus it was from a library clearance so it cost me next to nothing.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

finally we have You had me at hello by Mhairi McFarlane . this was my obligatory impulse buy. i have no idea if this is YA, Na or Adult but one look at the cover and i knew i just had to have it. the cute little silhouettes and hearts plus the bright text makes for a beautiful cover screaming “BUY ME”

… and that is it. yes only 4 books and not only were they all under $15 making this my cheapest month yet but with only 4 books that comes to 1 boom every 7.75 days (that is less than one book a week) … yeah well expect next months books to go through the roof.

April Books… how a great start failed horribly

well month two was off to a good start until it wasn’t

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERAas of 1 week ago this was the only book i had bought this month. not only is it only one book but it is a book that i said last month that i would be picking up so that is bonus points for me… or it would be if i didn’t fall down so horribly in the last week of this month. see my Top 10 Dos and Don’ts of books on a budget to learn from my mistakes.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

this series if you read my review is a prime case of Try before you buy. while i am more than happy to have added them to my shelf if i had read them i may not have rushed out to buy them or at least have only bought one of them. that being said Walking Disaster only cost me about $10 so it was not a HUGE expense

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

what do you get when you put me in a bookstore with a credit card? WAY TOO MANY BOOKS. Ok in fairness i only bought 4 and as The Immortal Rules is sitting pretty on my bookshelf me buying the Eternity Cure was sort of a given and after reading her Wings series i was legitimately interested in reading what Aprilynne Pike would give me next… that being said i am sincerely hoping it is as good as i think it will be rather than just another example of “you should have read it first”. Between the lives i must admit was a case of being drawn in by the description. i know nothing about the author and had never even hear of the book before but the story seems so intriguing stand by for a review on that one. As for Warm Bodies i must admit this was sort of an impulse buy. unless you have been living under a rock you will know that this has just been released as a movie and although i haven’t seen it yet it looks hilarious. when i saw a non movie cover i had to snap it up before they all go down that rout have been umming and arring over weather or not to read this (never been a huge Zombie fan) but judging by the fact i bought it it seems i am about to read it (bad form i know).

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

if you read my Top 10 Dos and Don’ts of books on a budget you may remember me telling of how i got a wonderful 30% off ONE full priced book voucher and then ended up buying 2 books because i couldn’t decide which one i wanted… well here they are. been meaning to pick them up for a while and as they are in gorgeous hard cover and one of them was 30% off how could i refuse … … … ok i am bad at the whole controlled buying thing.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

my last purchase is a classic i have been looking for for ages. as a lover of all myths and legends, Arthurian tales being no exception how was i going to turn down the classic collection by T. H White. the cover is gorgeous and cloth bound and when you consider that this is a compilation of 5 books the $25 price tag does not even seem that excessive. well not until you look back at last months books and see i bought a book of Arthurian legends then as well… but oh well libraries often have books covering similar topics…

well with some quick calculations that comes to 10 books which is 1 book every 3 days… so that is still a remarkable improvement despite my last minute splurge (which was the equivalent of 1 book every 0.7 days…oops) … although quite a few of these books were quite expensive so not sure if i actually saved any money.

Beware the books of March

well one month down and the question is how did my self imposed sentence of reduced book buying go? well I did have an improvement (yay) but probably not as much as I should have (and considering my wish-list in the coming months I don’t like my chance of much reduction for a while) anyway now to the good stuff which books have newly found their way onto my Shelves.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

ok I am maintaining that these don’t count (well not really) because they are text books… then again they did come out of my book budget and are taking up precious shelf space… and if they look all shiny and new its cause I have yet to use them… as this semester is half over I feel I should get to work but I have so many other unread books sitting on my shelf that look so much more interesting.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

again I am going to try to convince everyone that these don’t count (because they are cookbooks) but unlike the text books even I don’t believe that. in my defence though I believe that everyone should own a women’s weekly kid’s birthday cake book and this is the latest and greatest.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

well requiem is a new release and I do have the others on my shelf (also note the lack in delirium stories {I am being good and buying it later}) as for asunder I LOVED (and own) the first one and have been waiting for this for AGES (plus it came out over a month ago so I showed some constraint). I read Starcrossed late last year and was very disappointed not to be able to get my hands on the second one straight away (down side of the library) as I have yet to read the sequel (and a third one is coming out later this year) I figured it was time to buy them, even if I am not reading it until the next one comes out.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

well this lot is a mixed bag hallowed I said I was going to buy last month ( as I do have the 1st and the 3rd) and as I found it $10 cheaper then normal (once again thank you Big W) I figured I would grab it while I can. clockwork princess was picked up as soon as it was out (I need to know how this ends {that being said I don’t want it to end} and I know I wasn’t the only one) and while I had considered buying Ashala Wolf since I read it (and I recommend EVERYONE reads it) this time it really shouldn’t count as it came free with clockwork princess (no idea why but I am not complaining). then there is Light, and yes for most of you that does not get released until tomorrow and that may have influenced my grabbing it now rather than later. finally there came my real impulse buy Blink once, I have no excuse other than it looked ok, have yet to read it but I “had to have it”

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

ok wizard of Oz and King Arthur are Classics (and pretty classics at that) and Water for Elephants is a beautiful book plus it makes my shelf look a little bit more mature (not that I care about Maturity).

so by my count that comes to 16 books which is about 1 book every 1.9 days, and that is including textbooks. so that is an improvement … but probably still way above average.

Books of the New Year (January and Febuary)

Well as I seem to be constantly adding to my collection (maybe that is the reason I am broke) every month I will show off my new pretty books, this month will include January’s books as they are amazing too and deserve to be shown off. I will not be including ebooks for 2 main reasons…

1) I am yet to actually pay for one

2) This list would be over 100 books and would go on forever

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

While I had read some of these books before I am so glad I waited for the pretty covers, so I now have matching sets. also Maria V. Snyder is one of the best authors ever so I NEEDED these books… and after reading Graceling I need to know what happens next.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

Ok i admit this was a rebuy… I needed the box set. although in my defence i did sell my old books before buying this new set.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

I loved this series (The Sisters Grimm) as a kid but had never compleated the series. now I have bought the full set and can continue the journey. (there is nothing wrong with reading children’s books)  SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

yes this is 9 of Sarah Dessen’s amazing books all with the beautiful UK collage covers. so far have only read 2 of them but can’t wait to start the next one.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

there was no way I was going to be able to turn down these gorgeous leather-bound editions of Peter pan or Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. Just One Day was a must read and Watch Me is an Ex library book that cost me all of 20 cents (so doesn’t really count … ). Boundless I picked up because it was cheep(ish) and I already have the first book… still need to pick up the second though… I bought Easy the day after finishing it on my E-reader and admittedly the rest I have no excuse for other than… “it looks good”

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

like I wasn’t going to buy Indigo Spell the day it came out… although i am doing an ok job at holding off reading it until the next one comes out later this year. The Wishing Spell may be a children’s book (but I repeat nothing wrong with reading children’s books) but Colfer weaves a wonderful tale … and the cover is just so old-fashioned beautiful. first non nostalgic children’s book that I am actually anxious for the sequel. Reached was an obligation buy… I have the other two books and I am sure I will want to know how it ends. eve and once I bought because I enjoyed eve and I saw a nice hard cover once for about $10 (thank you big W) so I figured now was the time to buy… and I need my sets to match.

so at a rough guess (if in fact I am not counting any of December’s buys) that comes to about 44 books in 2 months or one book every 1.3 days… ok  I admit I may have a problem … I swear that this month I will reduce this so maybe I can rename this blog “confessions of a (not so) broke bibliophile” by the end of the year
